Zechariah Part 6

Zechariah 5 provides us with an almost impossible challenge. And, I don’t know how much of what ANYONE says should be considered accurate. However, the wording seems to indicate a time in the future, a future where our civilization isn’t what it is today. And, it may be that the Land of Shinar becomes something that we wouldn’t have expected.

Furthermore, we have some fantastic imagery, a flying scroll, the only time that we have ever seen female angels described in the Bible, a woman who represents wickedness and the basket that she is carried is about nine gallons.

This is heavy stuff, so let’s dig in.

Zechariah Part 6

Remember that this is part of the same vision that began in Chapter One, and it won’t end until Chapter Six. Never forget that our chapter divisions are artificial, inserted into the Bible by men who were not saved around eight centuries ago. The same is also true about verses that were inserted after they divided the Bible into chapters.

Never put great importance in a chapter break or even how a series of verses are divided.

(And, I don’t know why I’m the only person who talks about this.)

The Flying Scroll

This chapter is so unusual, I will need to quote all of it. And, the first part of the chapter describes a flying scroll. The KJV says roll, which is a bit unusual but there is some reason for that choice. And, it’s not some small scroll, like a letter written to someone. No, this is much larger. In the Hebrew it’s referred to as a מגלה (M’gee-lah). So this would be a scroll of substantial size, and it is.

1 Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll.

NOTE: The root for מגלה (m’gee-lah) is גלל (gah-lahl), which is a verb that means to roll. And, if you want to know what a wheel is (and I know that you do), its a גלגל (gal-gal). And, if someone asks you to summarize what you were going to say, he would tell you to not give him the whole מגלה (m’gee-lah) and to just give the important details. Moving on…

2 And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.

That’s a very big scroll. And, that means there must be a lot in it. And, I wonder about how many seals are on this scroll, keeping it closed. And no, we CANNOT say with ANY certainty that this is the same scroll that is unsealed in Revelation. But, some of the things that it does are compatible with what Revelation describes. Like this next two verses.

3 Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it.

4 I will bring it forth, saith the Lord of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.

Remember, that when you read Revelation, the sealed scroll introduced in Revelation Six, is going after an earth that has become utterly corrupt.

Does that mean that the scrolls in Zechariah and Revelation are the same?

Absolutely not. But, I understand the desire to speculate. Just do not turn your speculations into doctrine. Too many have been less-than-careful and have done great damage to themselves and the people who trust them. Whatever the case, the scroll itself is doing the damage to those who are evil.

The Flying Basket

The second part of this chapter refers to a flying basket. Now, the KJV says ephah, but it means either a measurement or a container that would hold and ephah. We’re not quite sure how much an ephah is. Some say nine gallons. Some say half that. But whatever it is, this container is not huge, so keep that in mind as we go through the next section.

5 Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth.

6 And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth.

7 And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah.

Now, if this is a nine gallon container, this is a tiny woman sitting in it. I know that this doesn’t mean anything, but I find it to be a curious.

8 And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof.

That ‘it’ isn’t an ‘it’. It’s a ‘her’. In Hebrew, the word ‘it’ will be masculine or feminine, depending upon what the subject is. But, in this case, the original Hebrew is using an older version of a modern Hebrew word for ‘her’ אותה (oh-tah). So, this wickedness is actually a woman. In fact, it’s the woman sitting in the container, which was sealed with lead.

9 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven.

10 Then said I to the angel that talked with me, Whither do these bear the ephah?

11 And he said unto me, To build it an house in the land of Shinar: and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base.

So, these two female angels carry this woman that is called Wickedness to Shinar, which is an area where Babylon was located as well as the place where the original tower of Babylon was built. And, I have a very important question:

WHY?

And, the follow up questions would be:

What would this look like?

What’s going on here?

I don’t know, but this doesn’t conform to anything that we have seen happen over the past 2500 years. Remember that – as of Zechariah’s writing – Babylon had already been conquered, and over the centuries it will slowly wither away until very little of it could be found. It was never destroyed. Just abandoned. And, over the centuries, local villagers probably took the stones of Babylon to build their own houses. All that would have been left, would be scattered mounds of brick, where once a proud city stood.

However, the Bible speaks of a future destruction of Babylon by the Medes (Iran) in Isaiah 13 and 14. We also have a similar destruction of Babylon in Jeremiah 50 and 51. And, they both speak of a destruction of Babylon that is complete and never ending. No one will be able to live there, after it is destroyed. But, we see people being able to live in the area of Babylon today.

However, there is one thing that both Isaiah and Jeremiah speak of when talking about this fantastic destruction of Babylon.

THE REDEMPTION OF ISRAEL

That’s right, there is a connection between this incredible destruction and Israel receiving the gift of salvation. We also know that Gog and Magog happens at this time. We know that Iran plays a role in Gog and Magog, and also in the destruction of Babylon.

Think about where Iran would need to march through to get to Israel. They would need to march through Iraq, and they would want to destroy or neutralize all the Sunni Arabs that they find.

Would this represent this future destruction of Babylon?

Will the Sunni Arabs carve out a state of their own in Iraq, a state that will be completely destroyed?

Possibly.

There’s also something else that happens when Gog and Magog attacks Israel. There will be a shift in the rain patterns due to a change in the geography of the our planet. The global earthquake that destroys everything will also change the height of mountains. Some will grow higher. Some smaller.

I’ve written about this in chapter 9 of Ezekiel’s Fire. The rains that come to Israel will shift southwards, and the change in the Syro-Lebanese mountains will starve Damascus of water.

Will this change also starve Babylon of water?

I have no idea, except that none of this has happened before. But, I also don’t understand why God places the woman named Wickedness in the area of Babylon.

I suspect that those who survive the coming of Gog and Magog will understand all of this better than we do now.

Lord willing, next week we will see the completion of this vision with yet another connection to the Book of Revelation.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
