Zechariah Part 7

Zechariah 6 is the end of the vision that began in chapter 1. And, it also speaks again about the four horses, but it adds a something new to their description.

They are the Four Spirits that go forth from the Lord. And, they sound a lot like the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Chapter 6 ends with a crown for Joshua the High Priest, and how this six chapter prophecy will be confirmed. Even more important, this prophecy speaks of Jesus coming and building the Third Temple – the Body of Christ.

Zechariah Part 7

Zechariah 6 is split into two parts. The first part is about the Four Chariots, and the second is about the crown given to Joshua the High Priest. Both are very significant in completely different ways.

The Four Chariots

Let’s actually read what is said about these chariots:

1 And I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came four chariots out from between two mountains; and the mountains were mountains of brass.

2 In the first chariot were red horses; and in the second chariot black horses;

3 And in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot grisled and bay horses.

4 Then I answered and said unto the angel that talked with me, What are these, my lord?

5 And the angel answered and said unto me, These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth.

6 The black horses which are therein go forth into the north country; and the white go forth after them; and the grisled go forth toward the south country.

7 And the bay went forth, and sought to go that they might walk to and fro through the earth: and he said, Get you hence, walk to and fro through the earth. So they walked to and fro through the earth.

8 Then cried he upon me, and spake unto me, saying, Behold, these that go toward the north country have quieted my spirit in the north country.

 – Zechariah 6:1-8 (KJV)

Notice the coloring of these horses. In Revelation they are White, Red, Black and Green. I know that translators say that last horse is Pale, but the original Greek says Chloros – Green. And, verse three might have been why the translators of Revelation called the fourth horse Pale.

Why?

Because the Hebrew word for ‘bay’ is אמץ (Ah-moh-ts). Unfortunately, there are different definitions to that word, depending on how it’s pronounced. And even then, the same pronunciation can have two different meanings. However, we are talking about a color. And Ahmots means ash-grey. And, ‘Ash Grey’ would be quite a pale color.

Now, when you look up this word in a concordance or interlinear, they might say ‘strong’. But, that’s a different word with a different pronunciation. If the word meant ‘strong’, it would still be spelled אמץ, but the pronunciation would be ‘Oh-mets’. And, since the context of the description of these horses are about their color, and because of the pronunciation of the word in the verse… we must stick with ash-grey or maybe ‘grey-brown’.

The Grisled horses?

Grisled must be an old English word for spotted, because that’s what the Hebrew word ‘bah-rode’ means.

So, we have five horses, with two that are together. Revelation actually does the same because of what follows the Pale horse.

And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

 – Revelation 6:8 (KJV)

What color of horse does Hell ride?

Is it spotted?

What are these horses?

Zechariah asks that, and the angel responds with, “These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth.

Is that what the horses and horsemen are in Revelation 6?

I would have to believe that the answer can only be a resounding YES!

Now, this does not mean that we are watching a different view of the removing of the first four Seals. These spirits are going out at a different time than Revelation 6. And, it appears that God uses these spirits to judge the Earth.

Why?

Well, after the White and Black horses went to the north country, the angel said this to Zechariah, “Behold, these that go toward the north country have quieted my spirit in the north country.”

Now, do the colors of the horses indicate what they do?

In Revelation 6, we see each rider given something specific, and was given a specific duty. Zechariah does not describe that here. Yet, the differences in colors would seem to show that these horses have different duties, and it would be natural to assume that these duties are similar to what Revelation describes. So, that would be my operating hypothesis.

White Horses – a conquering empire

Red Horses – Violence

Black Horses – Scarcity

Ash-Grey Horses with the Spotted Horses – Death and Hell

And, at the time when the White and Black horses went to the North, something happened that made the angel less angry, or more at peace. Some judgment happened up there.

What could have happened or happening around 520 BC?

Well, there were a bunch of revolts that Darius had to put down across his empire. That could account for the actions of the White and Black horses. Then, he invaded Europe, going after the Scythians. Then, Darius had to beat up Greece for fomenting revolt in Anatolia. He was the guy who lost the battle of Marathon. So, there was a lot of stuff going on up in the North that these two horses would have been a part of.

But, what did the Red Horses do?

They aren’t mentioned as doing anything. However, the rebellion that Darius had to spent two years putting down might have been the work of the Red Horses, instead of the White and Black that I mentioned earlier.

The Crowning Of The High Priest

Then Zechariah is commanded to do something unusual. With his own hands he is to create a crown for the High Priest, so that the High Priest would also be king. And THAT is highly unusual until you think of who Jesus is. Jesus is both our High Priest AND our King. But, let’s see what this section actually says:

9 And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

10 Take of them of the captivity, even of Heldai, of Tobijah, and of Jedaiah, which are come from Babylon, and come thou the same day, and go into the house of Josiah the son of Zephaniah;

11 Then take silver and gold, and make crowns, and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest;

12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The Branch; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord:

13 Even he shall build the temple of the Lord; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

14 And the crowns shall be to Helem, and to Tobijah, and to Jedaiah, and to Hen the son of Zephaniah, for a memorial in the temple of the Lord.

15 And they that are far off shall come and build in the temple of the Lord, and ye shall know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto you. And this shall come to pass, if ye will diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God.

 – Zechariah 6:9-15 (KJV)

Now, remember that this is during the time of Ezra. The gold came with Ezra. So, Zechariah takes the silver and gold and builds a crown for Joshua the High Priest, and sets it on his head. Then verses 12 and 13 say:

12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The Branch; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord:

13 Even he shall build the temple of the Lord; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

Is God calling Joshua the High Priest, the Branch?

No.

First of all, the word Branch is not branch. We’ve talked about this before, it’s actually bloom or sprout. Not a branch. But, that’s less important than who is being talked about:

Jesus

But, what temple does Jesus build?

Well here is what is said in John 2:

18 Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?

19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?

21 But he spake of the temple of his body.

 – John 2:18-21 (KJV)

The Body of Christ is the Third Temple, and there shall never be a need for a fourth. And, the fact that Jesus is also our King, brings this prophecy to life. This means that Zechariah was speaking about Jesus.

Then, one more thing is said:

15 And they that are far off shall come and build in the temple of the Lord, and ye shall know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto you. And this shall come to pass, if ye will diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God.

 – Zechariah 6:15 (KJV)

To prove that this six chapter prophecy was from the Lord, God will bring people from far away to build in this temple, and even the city.

Where did we see this?

The coming of Nehemiah, from Persia.

That confirmed to Zechariah that the vision and prophecy were true. But, it also proved to everyone else who might have thought that Zechariah had eaten the wrong mushroom. However, there is one more thing to contemplate.

Who is building in the Third Temple, the one that Jesus built – the Body of Christ?

You, me and everyone else who is a member of the Body of Christ. We are also those who are far off and have come to build in the Temple of the Lord, which is the church.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
